table tennis basic service rules

STEVE FOSTER: Hi there,
Welcome to AllAboutTableTennis.com In this video we’re going to be talking about
the basic rules of the serve. So to start the serve you need to make sure
that the ball is in the palm of your hand You’re not allowed to hold it in your fingers You have to hold it in the palm of your hand You need to make sure that the ball at all
times is behind the white line Which means you can’t go round the side of
the table and serve here You have to be behind the white line Also you need to make sure that the opponent
can see the ball at all times So you can’t hide the ball in any way So under the table, behind the bat (racket) Make sure your opponent can see the ball at
all times Then you need to make sure that you throw
the ball up straight You can’t throw it to the side or backwards. It’s got to be straight up and at least 6 inches (15cm) which is the height of the net So throw it up at least that high.
But you can throw it up higher if you want to. Then when you make contact,
make sure that the ball is dropping. You can’t hit the ball as the ball is going up You also need to make sure that it hits your side first,
before it goes over the net onto the other side So you can’t do it like in tennis, you’ve
got to make sure that it hits your side first before going over to the other side. Also, the moment you throw the ball up,
the ball is in play so you can’t miss the ball and serve again The moment you throw it up, the point is started. OK. That’s the serve.
