Stop Striking Out! – Baseball Rebellion Whiteboard Series

Hey everyone JK from Baseball Rebellion here to give you the next Whiteboard Series Video. And today, we’re gonna be talking about striking out. Okay, and the first thing about striking out is number one not being worried about it. Okay? The biggest thing we see in kids is they walk up to the plate from the on-deck circle Okay, not really knowing what’s going to happen. They’re not sure if they’re gonna have success because they don’t believe in themselves The confidence is bad, and they walk up to the plate already worried about the thing that inevitably probably will happen Okay So the first thing I’m gonna tell you guys don’t worry about striking out especially if you’re a coach or A parent, listen to this, you have to make sure that your player goes up to the plate with confidence Understanding that if they strike out Okay they’re gonna be okay the world’s not gonna end and there’s not gonna be any negative repercussions when they get back to the dugout or Especially when they get back in the car after the game. Striking out is a part of baseball the best players in the world do it All the time, but you have to go up understanding it’s risk/reward. We’re gonna smash the ball You’re going to strike out some more. But when you do hit it, you’re gonna crush it Okay, now walking up to the white board today You’re gonna see that the first one up on the board today is the timid and worried mindset Okay, first and foremost Even if you practice having great swings in the cage, you go to an instructor, you do a great job there You put up high numbers. That’s awesome. But if you go to the plate timid, it won’t matter. Being too picky means I’m looking at too many pitches early in the count. Okay so If you’re getting fast balls first, second pitch and you’re trying to get the best one or the perfect one and make the pitch with Those strikes that’s ridiculous. Take your hacks, especially early. You don’t want to get into two strike counts That’s the easiest way to strike out is to always be in two strike counts. Alright, next on the board We have can’t make late accurate decisions. Well, what does that mean? That means that I don’t have the ability to read the pitch long enough. To then make an accurate decision about where it is, what it is, and what speed it is. Okay, so if I’m going to strike out a lot Sometimes it’s gonna be because of “I just don’t understand where the ball is and how fast it’s coming” So, how do I do that? What does that mean? Poor lower half mechanics which lead to poor upper half mechanics. Which eventually leads to a slow barrel speed or bad barrel acceleration. Which doesn’t allow you to be the best player you can be. You’re gonna strike out a lot because you can’t make those decisions. So let’s talk about some fixes. Okay now very easily fixes can come from attacking early If you attack earlier in the count, just like I said, being too picky – if you attack early You’re gonna get a fastball generally in the first one first or second pitching in at-bat. Okay, go for it Right, even if you miss it, you take a hack at least maybe put some fear and doubt into the pitcher’s mind Maybe they’ll throw a bad pitch right. Next which is basically on in the same conversation here. Don’t miss opportunities Okay, good hitters are good because they don’t miss pitcher misses. It’s okay If you watch baseball games on TV I mean how many guys are really gonna hit a Verlander curveball or slider on the corner at the knees, right? Nobody hits that well, nobody! So what those guys do well is they don’t miss their opportunities early in the count for the most part unless they’re sitting on a pitch. But if you’re a youth player don’t even worry about that if you get it for fastball in the first two or three pitches Go for it. Okay now Developing better bat speed which equals acceleration which is gonna give you more power, but also more time. Well, how do you do that? Well one of the things that we talked about doing Here at the Baseball Rebellion is understanding your body and how the body works. So the thing that we use for this, if you don’t already know, is The Rebel’s Rack. And when you use this and you go through our footwork and our progression system online Or in-person if you come see us in Durham, North Carolina. Then you’re gonna understand what that means. Okay we have a very systematic approach to this that there’s Athletic and explosive and that’s the first step in making your bat go fast is understanding how your body works All right, welcome back up to the board here. The next one: Understanding and knowing your misses, okay, and then on top of that vision and training mechanics. So, what does that mean understanding your misses? Well, if you’re missing the ball and striking out or foul tipping, you’re missing in generally four ways. And we’re going to talk about those four ways today. All right The first way, timing mistakes: you’re swinging too early. So the ball is too far out in front of you Alright, and the barrel is coming across the plate before the ball gets to the catcher Alright, the opposite one would obviously be being too late So the ball is too far past me before I decide to make a swing. That goes back to making better earlier decisions. So you can let the ball get closer before you have to take your hack. Okay, and the other two ways – over the top. Okay, and then under the bottom? So you’re either missing over the ball too much or you’re missing under the ball. Not giving yourself a chance to hit. Now again, those two those things cannot be fixed if you do not know what they are. So if you’re in a game and you’re striking out a lot, maybe your swing is great Maybe you’re explosive and you have a good bat speed. But if you don’t know how you’re missing, you’re never gonna fix it Okay, now welcome back to the board. Let’s go over some things to avoid to hopefully cut back on some strikeouts We know they’re gonna happen. We have to come to grips that we will strike out. It’s okay All right, the first thing to avoid, “false pressure” So many kids come in to our facility or we talk to on the phone or online and they’re just so afraid that like I said before it doesn’t matter what they’re thinking about, what their swing is, that practice if they go to the games and they’re afraid of what might happen after Disappointing their fans, disappointing their teammate, they’re gonna go in with a timid mindset. So let’s avoid any false pressure. It’s okay It’s a game, baseball. We’re gonna have fun. All right, secondly, “just make contact.” Just make contact is a timid approach Okay, so if you have two strikes and you just want to make contact well, you’re probably just going to strike out Okay that goes on to the next point two strike swing change Okay, if you have a swing change with two strikes, you’re stripping away what you do well already I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a major league baseball player change anything about how they try to swing the bat with two strikes They may expand the zone mentally Or maybe you have a different clue about a pitch coming in because they face the guy a certain amount of times But if you’re, you know, college level or lower, don’t change your swing with two strikes Okay, don’t take away what you already do well, don’t take away your athleticism. Okay? Non-athletic explosive swing styles in mechanics So that goes back to understanding how to develop better bat acceleration and giving yourself more time and more power Alright, you have to swing in an athletic explosive style. So if you’re going back to some other videos, knob stuff Handsy stuff, wide bases with very little movement understanding about how the hips work Then you’re going to strike out more because you’re gonna constantly be beat by fast pitchers or any pitcherwith any sort of deception Especially when you get older. alright. And then lastly and always, “not knowing.” You have to know! And what that means is you have to understand what’s going on in games, what your swing is doing in practice, Why you might be late, why you might be missing over the top of balls Okay, so if you don’t understand that, you don’t know what you’re doing Then you’re gonna continue to make the same mistakes and it’s gonna get more and more frustrating. So I hope this helped today There’s a lot of ways to strike out. I hope some of these might help you guys. Please stay tuned for our next video Thank you for watching and we’ll see you next time
