Sitting volleyball is a Paralympic sport.
It’s been around, and was invented by the Dutch after World War II. It’s basically the
same game of volleyball, except you have to play seated on the floor. You have to keep
one of your butt cheeks in contact with the floor when you’re reaching up and playing
the ball. You can’t lift your butt off the floor. The court is about 1/3 the size of
a regular volleyball court. If you look at a regular volleyball court from above, you
have the 2 attack lines that are 3 meters off the net, that’s the width of our court.
Our court is 6 meters wide and 10 meters endline to endline. So you have two 5 by 6 meter segments.
The net is 1.15 meters off the ground, and since the court is smaller, the game moves
faster. All these spectacular diving, blocking and spiking happens at a quicker pace in sit
volleyball. So it’s a real fun sport. It’s not a sport just for disabled people. A lot
of people play it recreationally especially in Europe and in the Midde East, where if
they don’t have the knees and ankles to jump around a regular volleyball court like they
used to, so then they play seated.
