Self Defense Using a Baton or Baseball Bat : Defending Against a Shoulder Grab with a Bat

Tres Tew here. I’m an instructor at Yeshua’s
Ryu Martial Arts and on behalf of Expert Village, I’m going to be talking to you about the expandable
baton. Now, your baton is an excellent defense weapon. It can be used in grappling situations
and also extend to strike. Nick’s going to grab me on my shoulder right here. He doesn’t
know that I have a baton. He’s just trying to control me and trying to keep me from going
somewhere. Maybe he has a knife in another hand, but for our purposes here, he’s just
grabbing my shoulder. So what we are going to do, is I’m going to take our baton and
strike into the ribs here. And at the same time, we are going to grab this wrist just
like so. We are going to take and apply pressure down just like this. We are going to use the
butt of our baton to apply pressure on the arm, causing an arm bar which will make him
go down. From here, if he tries to raise up, if we let go, we can extend our baton and
hit the arm. This will cause a break. There are different levels of force that you can
use. The first is a controlling wrist lock. The second is a little bit harder controlling,
causing a sprain. The third is a break. Use your judgment. If you think that there’s possible
further attack coming from him, use your judgment. You can either cause sprain, you can just
control him, or you can cause a break. Again, use your good judgment. That’s how to defend
yourself when someone is grabbing you across the shoulder. Keep in mind the three different
levels of force.
