Mental Approach to Baseball Hitting : Baseball Hitting: Identifying Pitch Types

Now previously we’ve talked about finding
the release point. We’ve talked about keeping your eyes on the ball. Now obviously these
are very important factors and you want to obviously always do them. Now, in along with
keeping your eyes on the ball just for the sake of making contact, you can also keep
your eyes on the ball to try to figure out what type of pitch is coming. Is it a fast
ball? Is it a curve ball? Is it a slider? Is it a change up? Is it a circle change,
a knuckle ball? Whatever it is. Now if you’re in the box, you also have to know as far as
reading the pitch, is the pitch up? Is the pitch down? Inside, outside. So you sit here,
you’re in the box, you find the release point, the guy releases the ball. Now you see that
it comes out of his hand and it’s doing this weird, wobbly thing, you know it’s a knuckle
ball. Comes out of his hand, it’s making a tight little circle with the red seams, making
a tight little dot, it’s a curve ball. It’s coming at you and it’s just spinning over
like this, it’s a fast ball. Different things to look for to help you give you that little
bit of extra edge. Think about it. If you know, if you’re sitting there looking, you
can pick it up right away. Okay, that’s a fast ball, now I can make contact, boom. If
you know that it’s a curve ball or a change up, something of speed coming, know I have
to sit back a little bit and try to drive it to the opposite way. It’s different little,
different little things that’ll help you get that little bit edge make you a better hitter.
