Is Dimitrij Ovtcharov the Best Table Tennis Player of 2017?

2017 has been a very dramatic year for the world of table tennis, and one player who has enjoyed a very strong outing in 2017 so far is Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov. Victorious at the ITTF World Tour events held in India, China, Bulgaria and now Germany, Dimitrij Ovtcharov holds the most Men’s Singles gold medals on the 2017 Tour and also came away from the Europe Top 16 and European Championships with silverware. However, the real triumph came at the 2017 Men’s World Cup in Liège, Belgium where Ovtcharov defied the odds to lift the trophy for the first time in his career. There was some debate as to how worthy a champion Ovtcharov was at the World Cup with some table tennis enthusiasts claiming that fellow German star Timo Boll actually enjoyed the more impressive campaign at the tournament with stunning victories over China’s Lin Gaoyuan and Ma Long. Ovtcharov and Boll would meet again shortly after that result competing in front of the German fans at the 2017 German Open in Magdeburg. Boll put in another fine display in the title match and managed to push the tie right down to the wire. But, once again it was Ovtcharov who came out on top in a seven games thriller. It hasn’t all been good news for Ovtcharov this year exiting the Qatar Open earlier than expected, before suffering from injury problems leading to his absence from the German National Championships, and a fourth round defeat at the World Championships held in Düsseldorf. However, the positives most certainly outweigh the negatives for the German competitor and Ovtcharov will ultimately be delighted to have reached third position in the men’s world rankings table. Do you think Dimitrij Ovtcharov has been the standout male player of the year so far? Or is there another player who you believe is more worthy of that title?
