The Incheon Asian Games got off to a bang
over the weekend… with South Korea fastest out of the blocks.
South Korea raced to the top of the medal standings… with gold medals in air pistol,
judo, fencing and a number of other events. It was a golden start,… but there were a
few disappointments along the way… as our Kwon Soa reports.
We are less than three days in, but the 2014 Incheon Asian Games have already thrown up
a lot of successes, surprises,… but also disappointments for the South Korean team.
South Korea won their first gold medal on Saturday when Lee Ha-sung won gold in wushu.
And Korea has a new air pistol star… Kim Chung-yong ,.. who won two gold medals on
Sunday. There′s a bright future ahead for the 17-year-old
sensation, who not only contributed in winning in the 10 meter team event, but beat his idol
and Olympic gold medalist Jin Jong-oh in the 10 meter individual event.
Jin won the bronze medal. There were also some disappointments.
One of the biggest events that took place on Sunday was “Marine Boy” Park Tae-hwan′s
attempt to win the gold medal in the men′s 200 meter freestyle swimming event, but Korea′s
best swimmer could only manage a bronze. What started off as a fierce competition between
Park and his Chinese rival Sun Yang ended up with Japan′s Kosuke Hagino snatching
the gold. In football, both South Korea′s men′s
and women′s teams cruised to their 3rd wins of the tournament.
On the men′s side, the South Korean national team beat Laos 2-NIL.
The women thrashed the Maldives 13-NIL,… with 10 different players scoring in the match.
The team has scored 28 goals in just 3 matches in these Asian Games.
South Korea also swept the fencing events, winning four gold medals.
The team also took three golds in judo. Monday′s schedule is packed with exciting
events, but most attention is focused on South Korea′s first baseball match versus Thailand.
