How to Pick a Softball Bat | Softball Lessons

“I’m Erin Goettlicher, and I’m a professional
softball coach. After I played through high school, I went
out and played for college level, and then spent a cup of tea at the professional level. I’m self-employed, and own Pro Softball Training. Pro Softball Training offers instruction in
all kinds of softball. You name it, we can do it. Today, I will be talking to you about softball. Choosing the correct softball bat is very
important to our success as a hitter. We want to choose a bat that is the right
weight and length for our body type. The type of bat that we choose as far as brand
goes is really just our personal preference. Almost all bats you can buy today are made
very well with a lot of research and technology behind them. Most fast pitch softball bats are anywhere
between 28 to 34 inches long, depending on whether you’re a smaller person or a larger
person. The weight on them is also important. Typically the largest bat that you can purchase
is 34 inches by 26 ounces. That’s the heaviest and longest that most
will ever use for fast pitch softball. For our youth, a lot of times we use what’s
called something like a 10, 11, or a 12 drop. The drop is the difference between the length
and the weight. For instance, a bat that is 33 inches long,
and 23 ounces, is considered a minus 10, or a 10 drop. When we pick out the bat that we want to use,
it’s important to find one that isn’t too heavy. We want to be able to control the bat through
the zone without our hands collapsing. If we can hold the bat in front of us and
swing it back and forth without it falling, that’s a pretty good indication that it’s
not too heavy for us, and that might work. I always recommend if you’re playing on a
team, to go ask some of your team mates if you can try theirs. Try some different sizes and lengths, and
see what feels good to you. Another option is you can always go to the
store, hold them, and swing them, and feel how they are. So when choosing your softball bat, make sure
you find one that you can control, which is of perfect weight, and the length as well.”
