How To Hit A Fungo Like A Boss! Baseball Coaching Tips [How To Tuesday Ep.8]

What’s up guys? Coach Madden, official trainer, YouGoProBaseball.com
and this video here is for the coaches. We’re going to talk about how to hit a fungo
like a boss and I know from experience that hitting a fungo can be very difficult. In fact, when I first started coaching I was
horrible at hitting the fungo and it’s because it’s very different, yet very similar to a
regular swing but you have to get used to it and there is a few things that I’ve learned
along the way to be able to hit a fungo very well. Now, the first thing that I do when I hit
the fungo is I’ll grab the bat with my bottom hand, the fungo. Then I’ll wrap my top hand above it, ok, and
I want to wrap it in my finger tips, so I’ve got it here in the finger tips and then I
wrap it back. Now I’ve got a perfect space for my bottom
hand when I regrip the fungo. We’re going to grab our ball and throw it
up. When we throw it up we want to throw it up
and out in front. We don’t want to throw it right here because
then we’re going to be jamming ourselves, we’re going to be popping the ball up, or
doing little dinky ground balls, we don’t want that. We want to be able to get extended on this
ball and get a good hit. At the same time, we don’t want to throw it
too far out in front to where we’re lunging and reaching for that ball. So you want to throw it about a foot, maybe
a foot and a half at that 45 degree angle out in front. Then you’re going to grab this bottom of the
bat with your left hand again and take a nice good swing. It’s going to take practice. It’s going to take some time. Some guys like to throw the ball with their
back hand. They’ll hold it with their bottom hand, now
they’ve got the perfect place for their top hand, throw it this way out in front, and
swing. It’s personal preference. For me, this has always worked better because
I get to see that ball out in front and I don’t have to cross over, come back, and go
again. Again, it’s personal preference, whatever
you like, but that’s how I do it. Throw it out in front. You’ve got your fielder ready. You want to take a nice swing on it, get a
couple of bounces in there. You don’t have to crush it, you know the fungo
is a little longer than a normal bat so it’s going to do the work for you. You just want to make sure you get good contact
on it and get a good fluid swing. Now, direction wise, if I’m trying to make
this guy move to his glove side, all I’m going to do is try to stay inside that ball a little
bit more and aim it that way, direct the ball that way. So when I make contact, I don’t want to be
making contact out and around, I just want to stay inside and get it up the middle. So I’m going to hit one to his glove side
now. Lay out! Obviously, if you’ve got a good short stop
he’s going to make that play. Now we’re going to go back hand for him. So, give it time, practice it. It’s not a very easy skill to accomplish but
if you put in the work and you practice on it, coaches, you’re going to get it, no problem,
you’re going to start hitting the fungo like a boss. You’re going to run through practice a lot
easier. Infield/outfield is going to be a breeze. It’s going to be fun for you. Just work on it. If you guys have any more questions about
how to hit the fungo or how I hit the fungo, leave your comment below and I will let you
know. Also, if you’re still working on hitting the
fungo and you’re not quite there yet and you still want to get through your practice and
have some great infielding and outfielding, you can use this training tool that I sell
on my website. In fact, it’s on sale right now and it throws
fly balls, ground balls, whatever you need and it’s a lot easier than hitting a fungo. It’s very simple to use so this could be an
alternative to the fungo if you’re struggling at the time but of course everyone wants to
master the fungo so you could use this while you’re getting there. Again, I’ll leave a link below where you can
get this. It’s on my website right now on sale. If you liked this video, if it helped you
out coach, please give me that thumbs up. Why don’t you send some of my other videos
for the kids out to your team if you find them helpful. I would appreciate that a lot. Of course if you haven’t already hit that

in the next video.

  1. Was excited to see this one, I have always dreamed of being able to do the under the bat flip and swing like a few of my kids coaches do, unfortunately you didn't teach it lol!

  2. great video coach! the guy playing SS has amazing footwork and there is no way he could've had that ball to his glove side. is he a current player? he moves like one

  3. I'm having trouble throwing the ball from center field to third base how can I make my arm throw more further

  4. I just use a regular 33 jnch 30 ounce wooden bat and I hit pretty well. Not as much barrel control due to the weight of it (obviously). However I hit pretty well. The main keys are to:
    1. Stay loose, bat in fingertips
    2. Find your rhythm with how and where you throw it up
    3. Always warm-up your whole body, wrists, arms, legs, especially hips, etc.
    4. Work on improving your grip strength – equates to additional bat speed + power, equaling more distance
    5. Wear batting gloves (optional)

  5. Great video!

    Random observation:
This guy can pretty much aim the ball at will. Granted he's tossing the ball up, and I'm not sure if a fungo is easier to aim, but this leads me to think MLB hitters could do better against the shift. Learn to slap hit instead of aiming for the fence every time. Mix it up.

    Just a thought. ;o)

  6. Instead of the thing you're selling, just buy a chuck it for dogs and use that lol. that's literally what you're selling.

  7. Cheat code: ask the athletic trainers for some tape, and tape the bat exactly where your hands will be
