Explaining Sum and Sumif functions in Excel using baseball data

Hi everyone this is Brad today we’re taking
a look at the sum and the sum if functions in Excel taking a look at home
runs hit between 1901 and 2019 and Major League Baseball so what we’re gonna do
here we’re going to enter into this cell and we’re gonna select equals and then
we’re gonna do some and there we’re going to put in the parentheses now you
can either click here into that cell or just type in b2 you can see it’s
highlighted now I’m gonna put a colon because I also want this one right in
here so when I just type in C to close the parentheses and there you have it
there’s your total now if you want this formula can come down into your other
cells as well so it’s going to go ahead and and you can see if you just select
in here you can see the different formulas that come up now if I don’t
want that I’m just gonna go head back if I want it to quickly go all the way down
from 1901 to 2019 what I can do is just double click and there you have it so
we’ll go all the way down here pretty awesome so now what we’re gonna do we’re
gonna click here so we’re gonna see how many home runs have been hit in all
since 1901 so we’re gonna do some and then we’re gonna type in d2 we’re gonna
put in parentheses d2 all the way down to d1 20 close it and there are your
total number two hundred ninety-eight thousand seventy two homeruns now we’re
gonna take a look at the sum F function okay so now we’re gonna take a look at
the sum F function so what we’re gonna do is we’re just going to select right
in here and we’re gonna type in equals sum yeah now we’re gonna put in
parentheses couple things to see you can always come right up in here and select
this insert function and it will tell you the range criteria in some range
they could certainly put that in I personally like going in here and just
typing in equals sum if and then parentheses and then seeing it all right
here it just works better for me so what we’re gonna do we’re gonna see total
home runs hit since 2010 using this spreadsheet so what we want to do in our
range is going to be a2 all the way down to a 120 because that’s going to be the
year we’re going to go ahead and we are going
to then put in a comma and now we have the since we’re doing something specific
we’re gonna put something this criteria it’s gonna be anything since 2010 so
we’re gonna put in a greater than 2010 and then we’re going to go ahead and
we’re going to put a parentheses around that then we’re gonna put a comma and we
want to put now in our some range so we’re gonna go B and C and you can see
this is why I like doing in here it’s all selected in there we are now gonna
go head in and we’re gonna close the parentheses hit enter it and you’ll see
total home runs hit since two thousand ten twenty two thousand five hundred
eleven so pretty cool any questions let me know thanks for watching take
