Cuatro Esquinas: The Basics of Street Baseball In Havana | Arriba Cuba

(CUATRO ESQUINAS:
STREET BASEBALL – CUBAN STYLE) We have always loved baseball
since we were kids. Poverty has never stopped us
from playing baseball. We didn’t have gloves,
a ball or a bat. We would use a piece of cloth, a stone, some scotch tape, whatever we could find, and we would make a ball. Let me show you an example. We would take a stone, a piece of cloth, and we would wrap it around, trying to make it
as round as possible. The stone gave it some weight so it could be pitched and it could roll well
when hit with the bat. We also used thread
or a rope to tie it and then we covered it
with tape. You could catch it
with your bare hands. It wouldn’t hurt, even if
we didn’t have gloves. We had a great time, we played, and our love for baseball
would grow more and more. Nothing will stop us
from playing baseball. It’s the national sport. It always has been
and will always be that. (CUATRO ESQUINAS:
