Campbell and Hopkinton win baseball titles


II AT 7:00. THE REST OF THE SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BEING PLAYED TODAY, AT LEAST THE MAJORITY OF THEM. 11 STATE TITLE GAMES, BEGINNING WITH BELMONT AND CAMPBELL IN DIVISION III BASEBALL. THEY HAD THE FIRST GAME OF THE DAY. THIS ONE WENT TO EXTRA INNINGS . TIED AT 3-3. TOP OF THE NINTH, BELMONT THREATENING. DOUG PRICE HITS A GAPPER WITH A RUNNER IN SCORING POSITION. BUT D.J. SIMONEAU COMES OUT OF NOWHERE AND MAKES THE UNBELIEVABLE DIVING CATCH IN CENTER FIELD. AND THEN HE DOUBLES UP THE RUNNER AT SECOND BASE AND THAT ENDS THE INNING. STILL 3-3 IN THE TOP OF THE 10TH. THIS TIME, JONNY LECLAIR SINGLES THROUGH THE LEFT SIDE. KYLE MINERY SCORES. THEY SEND TOM BICKFORD, AND HE’LL SCORE TOO. 5-3. BELMONT TAKES THE LEAD. BOTTOM 10, 5-4 NOW. BASES LOADED FOR CAMPBELL. JACOB DONOVAN CHOPS A GROUNDER TO THIRD, BUT THEY CAN’T MAKE THE PLAY AT FIRST. MATT GAGNE AND JAKOB SCOPELITES BOTH SCORE ON THE ERROR, AND CAMPBELL WALKS OFF WITH A 6-5 WIN. CAMPBELL COMPLETES A PERFECT SEASON, 19-0. IT’S THEIR THIRD TITLE IN FOUR YEARS. PITTSFIELD AND HOPKINTON TOOK THE FIELD NEXT IN DIVISION IV. TOP OF THE FIRST, HOPKINTON GETS ON THE BOARD FIRST. BEN MCMANUS DRIVES ONE OVER THE LEFT FIELDER’S HEAD, R.B.I. DOUBLE SCORES SAM CRAWFORD FROM SECOND. 2-0 HAWKS. TOP OF THE THIRD, WILL RHYNHART LAYS DOWN THE SACRIFICE BUNT, BUT THE PANTHERS THROW IT AWAY AT FIRST. THAT WILL ALLOW COLBY MARSHALL TO COME AROUND FROM SECOND BASE, 3-0 HOPKINTON. SAME INNING, NICE PLAY BY PITTSFIELD’S CASEY CLARK, THE HAWKS TRY THE DOUBLE STEAL, BUT CLARK READS IT WELL AND GUNS DOWN THE RUNNER AT THE PLATE TO END THE INNING.
