BYU Football with Kalani Sitake – October 29, 2019

AND A SECOND GAMA WITH A RIVALRY TEAM. A LOOK TO LOGAN WITH BYU FOOTBALL WITH KALANI SITAKE STARTS NOW.>>THIS IS BYU FOOTBALL WITH KALANI SITAKE. NOW YOUR HOST, THE VOICE OF THE COUGARS, GREG WRUBELL. Greg: ALL RIGHT, AND ONCE AGAIN, COUGAR NATION, WELCOME BACK INSIDE OF STUDIO C AT THE BYU BROADCASTING BUILDING IN PROVO, UTAH, COUGAR FOOTBALL PROGRAM, AND WE HAVE ENJOYED PUTTING THIS HOUR TOGETHER FUR. COMING UP, QUESTIONS, YOU CAN SUBMIT QUESTIONS FOR KALANI. COMING UP ON THIS EVENING’S BROADCAST, THE RECAP. THE COUGARS UPSET OVER NUMBER 14, BOISE STATE, AND INSIDE OF THE BYU FILM ROHM. AND THE 9th MEETING WITH UTAH STATE. AND FROM LIBERIA TO PROVO. QUESTIONS FOR COACH SITAKE, AND TALK WITH MORONI LAULU-PUTUTAU HERE IN THE STUDIO. AND HERE, WE SAY HELLO TO THE HEAD COACH OF THE BYU COUGARS, HE IS KALANI SITAKE. [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]>>Kalani: HOW’S IT GOING? ALL RIGHT. Greg: GOOD TO SEE YOU. YOU.>>Kalani: GOOD TO SEE U. WHAT’S UP, GUYS?>>IT WAS TEN DAYS AGO –>>Kalani: I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT T WE ALREADY MOVED ON, AND WE’RE PREPARING FOR THE NEXT GAME AND FOCUSING ON UTAH STATE. BUT YES, IT FEELS GOOD TO HAVE A BYE WEEK AND DEAL WITH THE WIN, AND THE GUYS WORKED HARD AND WE HAD A GREAT PRACTICE TODAY AND WE’LL BE READY FOR THEM. Greg: LOOKING BACK ON THE PAST, WHAT A GREATEST FOR A BIG NIGHT FOR THE TEAM, I THOUGHT.>>Kalani: THE COACHES WORKED HARD. AND THE PLAYERS EXECUTED A GREAT GAME PLAN. THE PRAYERS, THEY’RE ON A MISSION TO SHOW THAT THEY’RE WAY BETTER THAN WE HAVE SHOWN IN THE PREVIOUS WEEKS, AND IT WAS FUN TO SEE THEM PLAY AND GET THE WIN AGAINST A QUALITY OPPONENT. AND A LOT FROM BOISE STATE, WE STILL COULD HAVE DONE BETTER IN THAT GAME, AND WE COULD HAVE IMPROVED A LOT AND THAT’S WHAT WE FOCUSED ON THIS WEEK AND LAST WEEK. IT’S JUST NICE TO BE ABLE TO DO IT WITH THE WIN THOUGH. Greg: WE’RE GOING TO LOOK BACK AT THAT WIN OVER BOISE STATE. BYU WENT DOWN 7-0 EARLY. AND BOISE STATE SCORED ON THE FIRST POSSESSION, BUT THEN BYU HIT AND TIED THE GAME AT 7. LOPINI KATOA SCORING THE WIN. AND A FIELD GOAL TOOK US TO HALFTIME, BYU DOWN 10-7. GREAT THIRD QUARTER FOR BYU. TREMENDOUS THIRD QUARTER. 11 PLAYS, AND FINAU, THIS WAS HIS FIRST TIME.>>Kalani: GREAT PLAYER, AND HE WAS WAITING FOR HIS OPPORTUNITY. AND I THINK IT WAS NICE THAT HE WAS ABLE TO GET SOME RUNS AND SHOW HIS ATHLETICISM AND SPEED. SO IT WAS NICE TO SEE HIM OUT IN THE OPEN FIELD. AND HE’S VERY DANGEROUS WHEN HE HAS THAT SPACE. Greg: THE LEAD, AND COUGARS WOULD NOT RELINQUISH IT. WITH SACKS, AND A VERY PRODUCTIVE THIRD QUARTER. THE FIRST OF TWO TOUCHDOWN PASSES COMING UP IN MATT BUSHMAN.>>Kalani: IT WAS A WELL EXECUTED PLAY, SET ONE THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK EARLY IN THE GAME. AND BOISE WAS EXPECTING THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK FOR THE FIRST DOWN. AND IT WAS A GREAT PLAY CALL. AND COACH GRIMES DID A GREAT JOB. Greg: KAUFUSI, IT WAS AHIZYA AND HIS BROTHER, JACKSON. TWO INTS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, KELLAN ‘, THIS SET UP THE QUICK SCORE.>>Kalani: YES, JACKSON AND ISAIAH WERE ABLE TO DO THEIR JOB, AND IT WOULDN’T HAVE WORKED IF THE OTHER GUYS HAD NOT BEEN PUTTING THE PRESSURE O.>>Spencer: GREAT PLAY.>>Kalani: A LOT OF POINTS IN THE THIRD QUARTER. LET’S DO THAT EVERY QUARTER. Greg: YOU AVERAGED 17 YARDS PER PLAY, AND WE’LL TAKE THAT EVERY WEEK. AND BAYLOR ROMNEY CONTROVERSYING A STRIKE, AND MAT BUSHMAN, BRINGING IT IN FOR SIX. THE FIRST MULTIPLE TOUCHDOWNS IN MATT BUSHMAN’S CAREER. FROM OCTAVIUS EVANS, MAKING IT 28-15, THE TWO-POINT CONVERSION WAS GOOD. AND THEN LATER IN THE QUARTER, BACKUP, AND BOISE IS DOWN TO THE SING QUARTERBACK, BUTLER, WITH BYU AT 28-25. AND FINALLY TO END THE GAME, THE SCRUB FORMATION COMES BACK, BUT NOT BEFORE A CONTROVERSY TO MEASURE AND REMEASURE AND A LOT OF DISCUSSION ON WHAT TO DO NEXT?>>Kalani: THAT’S WHY THEY HAVE THE REPLAY&THE CHALLENGES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. WE KNEW WE WERE GOING TO GO FOR IT, AND WE HAVE OUR OFFENSE AND OUR SCRUM AND PUNTING JUST IN CASE? Greg: TAKE A LITTLE PUSH, AND YOU HAVE THE PEOPLE IN THE BACKELD TO HELP THEM OUT AND MEANT YOU COULD SELL BAY.>>Kalani: AUSTIN REALLY WANTED IT, AND THEN THE GUYS, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT THE PLAYERS GET WHAT THEY WANT AND THEY WANTED TO GO FOR IT. Greg: SO BYU FOR OF A THIRD TIME THIS YEAR WINS THE GAME BY EXACTLY 3 POINTS. 28-25 IS THE FINAL SCORE. SO AS THE SECOND WIN OVER A RANKED TEAM THIS YEAR, AND A LOT OF THE GREATS IN BYU FOOTBALL HISTORY, THE COUGARS NEVER BEFORE THIS YEAR HAVE BEATEN OF A RANKED TEAM AT HOME TWO TIMES IN ONE SEASON.>>Kalani: THAT’S A TRIBUTE TO THE PLAYERS, AND I’LL BE HONEST, TO SEE HOW EXCITED WE WERE TO SEE THE FANS THERE THAT NIGHT. REALLY BAD WEATHER. AND IT WAS CRAZY, IT RAINED AND GOT US WET. AND THEN FROZE US WITH THE SNOW. SO THE COUGAR FAITHFUL WERE OUT THERE WARNING US UP, AND OTHERS WERE EXCITED.>>I FELT THE SAME THING TOO. IT SEEMED THAT THE CROWD WAS REALLY WELL SPREAD AROUND THE ENTIRE STADIUM. AND THE FOLKS HUNG OUT IN THE BAD WEATHER, AND IT WAS GOOD ALL THE WAY AROUND.>>Kalani: THEY MADE A LOT OF NOISE, AND THAT’S THE WAY TO DEAL WITH THE COLD, SCREAM AND JUMP UP AND DOWN, AND THEY GAVE US A LOT OF ENERGY. SO IT WAS REALLY FUN, AND THANKS TO THE FANS WHO WERE THERE. Greg: BAYLOR ROMNEY, PASSING IS USUALLY 150, AND THAT’S A SURE SIGN OF VICTORY. WHAT DO YOU THINK HE DID?>>Kalani: GOOD JOB, AND HE HAD A LOT IN HIS POCKET AND THERE WERE TIMES WHAT IT BROKE DOWN, BUT HE WAS ABLE TO SIDESTEP AND MAKE THE PLAY, BUT OTHER THAN THE FIRST PLAINTIFF GAME, EVERYTHING ELSE WAS FLAWLESS IN THE WRAY THAT HE MANAGED THE OFFENSE AND RAN THE PLAYS, AND I WAS REALLY PLEASED WITH HIM. HE’S A GUY WAITING FOR HIS OPPORTUNITY. AND I WAS GLAD THAT HE HAD THE CHANCE TO MAKE THE PLAYS. Greg: BAYLOR WAS PLAYING, AND IS JAROM CLEAR?>>Kalani: YES, BAYLOR AND JAROM ARE COMPETING THIS ENTIRE WEEK. AND WE’RE GOING TO GO WITH THE GUY THAT GIVES US THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN AND THOSE GUYS CAN KEEP COMPETING AND I TRUST GRIMES AND A-ROD, THE COACHING STUFF TO GET IT ON THE FIELD. Greg: SO BOTH GUYS ARE AVAILABLE NOW, THE STARTERS, WE WON’T KNOW UNTIL GAME TIME?>>Kalani: WE’LL FIND OUT TODAY. AND I’LL LET YOU KNOW AS SOON AS I FIND OUT.>>THE COMPETITION OUT THERE.?>>Kalani: WE HAVE SOME THIS WEEK AS WELL. AND ALLOWED TO COMPETE AND SEE WHO CAN FIGHT BACK. IT’S A SMALL WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE. AND IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO LOOK AT MORE GUYS THAN IN THE ENTIRE GAME. SO ITS NICE WE’RE GETTING GUYS BACK ON THE FIELD, AND JAROM IS BACK, AND HE HAS THE CAST OFF AND EVERYTHING. SO IF YOU ASK HIM, I DON’T KNOW IF HE’LL BE READY TO GO THIS WEEK, BUT WE’LL BE PREPARED. Greg: BEFORE LONG, YOU SIT HERE WITH THREE QUARTERBACKS MAKING STARTS THIS SEASON, AND IT’S AN ABUNDANCE OF GOOD.>>IT’S A SITUATION WHERE WE NEED QUARTERBACKS, I REMEMBER THAT FROM A FEW YEARS AGO, AND THE MORE THE MERRIER FOR US, ESPECIALLY AT BYU. SO WE SHOULD NEVER BE DOWN ANY QUARTERBACKS, AND IF WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH ALL SIX OR SEVEN GUYS, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO WIN GAMES. Greg: AMONG THE CHANGES WE SAW IN THE BOISE GAME. A NEW LOCATION FROM JEFF GRIMES. I KNOW HE LIKED THE PERSPECTIVE AND WHY DID IT WORK SO WELL FOR HIM AND THE TEAM?>>HE’S A BIG GUY, AND HE’S USED TO BE ON THE O LINE. WE HAVE TWO FRESHMEN PLAYING AT TACKLE BUT ALSO FRESHMEN AT GUARD. AND THERE ARE NEW THINGS THAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO OFFENSIVELY, AND HE HAS A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH AARON IN THE BOX AND STEVE IN THE BOX, AND COMMUNICATE REALLY WELL. THE GUYS BROUGHT IT UP TO ME THAT HE WANTED TO BE DOWN THERE ON THE FIELD AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE, AND HE’S A PERSON OF INTENSITY AND YOU MET HIM BEFORE. IT’S EASY FOR HIM TO GET GUYS GOING IF THINGS ARE GOING THROUGH A LITTLE BIT OF A LULL? Greg: HEY, HE TOLD ME ON COORDINATOR’S CORNER, HE LIKED THE VIBE DOWN THERE.>>Kalani: I’M SURE THAT THE WEATHER MADE HIM THINK 2016 BUT HE’S A GOOD GUY, AND HE CAN PUT ON A COAT AND BE READY TO ROLL. Greg: THE COUGARS WITH TWO AGAINST TO 25, AND AS WE HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE TOP PLAYS, LET’S WATCH OUR OWN JAROM JORDAN, AND DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, ILAISA TUIAKI, AS WE GO INSIDE.>>Jarom: IT’S A GREAT WIN FOR THIS TEAM. AND THE DEFENSE SHOWED UP, AND HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE AGAINST BOISE STATE.>>I THOUGHT THE AGGRESSION, IT WAS A GOOD MESSAGE FOR THE BOYS, AND THE AMOUNT OF TIME. AND THAT REALLY TRICKLED STRAIGHT DOWN FROM THE TOP. WE WERE ALL ONBOARD WITH IT, AND I THINK THAT THE MESSAGE WAS GOOD FOR THE KIDS.>>Jarom: LET’S BREAK DOWN THE FILM. FIRST WITH THE DEFENSIVE LINE AND SPACE AND FORGET.>>FOR ME, WHAT I ALWAYS THOUGHT WAS IMPORTANT.? AND ALL OF THE OFFENSIVE PLAYERS, BASICALLY ERASED ALL OF THE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN, AND JUST SAY CAN THE RUNNING BACK RUN IN BETWEEN YOU TWO OR YOU TWO? THIS GUY HAS THE HARDEST JOB. YOU CAN ALWAYS GET DOUBLE TEAM, BUT ONE SIDE OR THE OOH, AND HE HAS TO BE READY TO PLAY WITH GREAT TENACITY. SO YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURE HERE, AND YOU STOP T. WE’RE PRAISING ALL THREE OF THEM RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE ALL THREE OF THEM, SO ANY TIME YOU CAN TAKE UP TWO, HERE BASICALLY, NOTHING TO SLOW HIM DOWN, AS FAR AS WHAT HE TACKLES. AND HE WILL LOVE HAVING DEFENSIVE LINEMEN HOLDING THE SPACE. BUT THIS CERTAINLY IS EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?>>Jarom: THE NEXT PLAY, ONE OF THE TWO SACKS OVER THERE.>>WITH THE SPACE, WITH THE CORNERBACK, WHAT WE TALK ABOUT IS BASICALLY CREATING A TRAP. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN A DEFENSIVE LINEMAN IS AN INDICATOR. THAT THE PASS RUSHING NEEDS TO STOP. AND THIS TELLS ME WHEN I’M WATCHING IT, HIS EYES ARE CORRECT. AND HE HAS HIS HANDS ON THE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. BUT HE HAS HIS EYES ON THE QUARTERBACK, AND THE INDICATOR, THE QUARTERBACK SEPARATING AND GETTING READY TO THROW, AND THAT TELLS US THAT ITS TIME TO GET HIS HANDS UP. SO HE PUTS IT BACK DOWN, AND AS THE QUARTERBACK, HE STEPS UP AND HE’S READY TO GO ANOTHER DEFENSIVE LINE PLAY, AND THE TWISTS. ARE THESE COMING FROM THE SIDE LINE?>>THEY ARE, THIS WAS A CHECK FOR US. WE HAVE WHAT WE CALL THE OX ON THIS SIDE. AND HE GOES FIRST, AND LUKE IS DECKED. AND KHYRIS IS LOOKING TO MOVE OUTSIDE AND DEVIN IS MOVING INSIDE. SO WE CALLED THE INSIDE, THE INSIDE GUY, AND THE OUTSIDE GUY IS GOING TO COME FROM UP AND UNDER. YOU CAN SEE PEYTON RIGHT HERE ON THE EN. AND THE TACKLE. PEYTON LOOKS BACK INSIDE. AND THAT’S ANOTHER PERSON THAT’S GOING TO SHOW UP AS WE PRESS DOWNHILL. HE SHOWS UP.>>Jarom: OKAY, UTAH STATE, ANOTHER TOUGH CHALLENGE, AND WHAT’S THE KEY TO BEATING THE AGGIES IN LOGAN?>>WE CAN’T BE RUNNING AROUND AND LOOKING FOR THE CALL. TEAMS LIKE THIS THAT ARE FAST-PACE AND GET THE BALL, WE ALL TALK ABOUT CLEATS ON THE GROUND?>>Jarom: APPRECIATE THE TIME. AND GOOD LUCK FROM LOGAN. Greg: ALL RIGHT, JAROM, AND THANK YOU, DAY-TO-DAY SPORTS PLAY-BY-PLAY, WATCH BYU SPORTS NATION WITH JAROM JORDAN AND SPENCER LINTON. WHEN WE COME BACK, LOGAN AND BYU’S GAME AGAINST UTAH STATE. THIS IS BYU FOOTBALL WITH KALANI SITAKE. Greg: THE OLD WAGON WHEEL. THE PRIZE FOR THE WINNER OF THE BYU-AGGIE STATE GAME SINCE 1968 AND LOOKING AHEAD TO THE WEEKEND. THE PREGAME COVERAGE BEGINS ON BYU RADIO WITH THE COUGAR PREGAME LIVE AT 8:00 EASTERN, 5:00 PACIFIC WITH BYU-TV’S COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF AN HOUR LATER. ESPN 2 AND BYU RADIO, WITH POST-GAME COVERAGE ON BYU-TV AND BYU RADIO. [ APPLAUSE ] WELCOME BACK, AND WE HAVE A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY SHOUT OUT TO A FORMER COUGAR FOOTBALL PLAYER IN THE 1950s. LATE 5s. DICK AND CELEBRATING HIS 80th BIRTHDAY WITH US. HE’S IN ATTENDANCE TONIGHT. [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]>>TY HOPE IT’S OKAY TO SAY FANTASTIC IS CURRENTLY IN A BATTLE WITH CANCER, AND WE WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THE BEST TO THAT END.>>>BYU-TV HAS WON 15 OF ITS LAST 20 MEETINGS WITH UTAH STATE. BUT THEY ARE A CLOSELY CONTESTED RIVALRY. AND HERE ARE COMMENTS FROM CURRENT COUGARS.>>I WANT TO BEAT UTAH STATE MORE THAN UTAH AND THAT MAY BE A LITTLE BIT TOO FAR, BUT I DO HAVE VERY STRONG FEELINGS FOR THAT TEAM. AND I WANT TO BEAT THEM.>>WHOEVER IS GOING TO WIN THIS GAME IS GOING TO BE THE TEAM THAT’S MORE PHYSICAL ON SATURDAY NIGHT.>>CRAZY FANS, ALL ENERGETIC, AND IT’S FUN. WE’RE EXCITED TO GO AND TO PLAY UTAH STATE.>>HE DOES A GREAT JOB OF GETTING THE BOYS TO BUY IN AND BE READY AND PLAY TOUGH. AND WE’RE GOING TO SEE THAT. IT WILL BE ANOTHER FUN GAME.>>THE GAME MEANS A LOT TO US. DOESN’T MATTER WHO IS PLAYING, UTAH STATE, USC, WHOEVER, WE’RE GOING TO COME IN AND WIN.>>IT’S GOING TO BE A TOUGH CHALLENGE, BUT IT’S ABOUT TIME WE GET THAT WAGON WHEEL BACK. Greg: ALL RIGHT, BYU COMES INTO SATURDAY’S GAME 2 AND 4 ON THE SEASON. AND THE AGGIES 2 AND 3. IT’S UTAH STATE’S FIRST LOSS THIS SEASON TO A NON-P5 PROGRAM. THEY COME IN 4 AND 2, AND PRETTY GOOD, BUT THE AGGIES HAVE GOOD WINS ON THE RESUME THIS YEAR. Greg: THEY DO, AND YOU SAW FESI MENTION, THEY LAY AT HOME AS WELL AND THIS IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO GO UP THERE IN LOGAN AND HAVE A GREAT GAME AND MAKE IT WORK. BUT THEY POSE SO MUCH ON THE OFFENSE, WITH THE SPEED. AND IT’S THE SAME THING THAT THEY DID LAST YEAR. I THINK LAST WEEK AGAINST AIR FORCE IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. IT’S GOING TO HATCHER THEIR ABILITY TO THROW THE BALL. IT’S WINDY AND COLD. AND I THINK THEY’RE THERE TRYING — THEY ONLY HAD LIKE 30 PLAYS ON OFFENSE, AND AIR FORCE MILKED THE CLOCK AND TOOK CARE OF THE BALL. AND THE POSSESSION WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE OTHER SIDE. SO WE HAVE TO DO OUR IDENTITY. AND IT’S GOING TO BE A PHYSICAL GAME. THE TEAM THAT’S MOST AGGRESSIVE AND PHYSICAL IS GOING TO WIN. Greg: WHAT YOU SAID A MINUTE AGO, UTAH STATE IS DEAD LAST NATIONALLY IN POSSESSION TIME RIGHT NOW, HAVING A TOUGH TIME STAYING ON THE FIELD OFFENSIVELY. QUARTERBACK JORDAN LOVE HAD A GREAT GAME AGAINST YOU LAST YEAR, BUT THIS SEASON IS DOWN A BIT. THE PAST EFFICIENCY NUMBERS ARE DOWN A FULL 40 POINTS OVER LAST YEAR, AND WHAT ARE YOU SEEING OUT OF THE PLAY OF JORDAN LOVE THIS YEAR?>>I THINK HE’S VERY DANGEROUS, AND HE HAD SOME STRUGGLES THIS YEAR, BUT HE’S A MANIFEST QUARTERBACK, AND HE HAS SPEED AND A STRONG ARM. AND HE HAS TO CREATE SOME ISSUES FOR US, WHERE WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF OUR COVERAGES. IT’S THE BACKFIELD. BUT FOR US, WE ARE GOING TO FIND A WAY TO BE AGGRESSIVE OFFENSIVELY, AND THAT’S NOT JUST BLITZING BUT IT COULD, AND WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE GAME. BUT I THINK FOR MY SIDE, BE AGGRESSIVE AND I THINK THAT THE D LINE HAS TO OWN THE FRONT, AND WHATEVER WE DO FOR THE REST OF THE DEFENSE AS FAR AS COVERAGE, MIXING UP OUR COVERAGES AND THINGS LIKE THAT, WE’LL FIND OUT ON SATURDAY. BUT I THINK THAT THE GUYS ARE READY FOR THE MOMENT NEXT WEEK TO PREPARE FOR IT, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE CAN BRING TO THE TABLE? Greg: IT SEEMS LIKE WITH THE LAST GAME. YOU SAID WE HAVE TO GET IT BACK HERE, AND BOISE STATE, THE RIVALRY GAMES, YOU CAN’T LET THEM BEING TOO ONE-SIDED.>>Kalani: YES, WE PLAY GOOD WHEN WE HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE, AND THIS IS SOMETHING FOR US TO PROVE. TO GET THE WAGON WHEEL BACK. AND GARY WITH THE SWITCH WHEN UTAH STATE BECAME MORE COMPETITIVE IN THE RIVALRY GAME. AND HE’S BACK THERE AS HEAD COACH. HE’S A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE, A TEAMMATE. AND THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, THERE ARE A LOT OF GUYS THAT I KNOW THERE.? JUSTIN AND I WERE REALLY CLOSE WHEN I WAS HERE IN COLLEGE, AND WE’RE FAMILIAR WITH EACH OTHER, AND IT MAKES IT EVEN MORE FUN, BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO THE PLAYERS EXECUTING AND MAKING THE PLAYS, WE LEARNED SO MANY THINGS FROM LAST YEAR AND WE HAVE CHANGED THINGS UP, BUFF LAST YEAR F. YOU LOOK AT THE FUNDAMENTALS AND THE TECHNIQUE OF THE GAME. WRECKED HAVE REALLY IMPROVED AND WE WOULD HAVE A BETTER OUTING IF WE HAD DONE THAT. Greg: TAKE US THROUGH YOUR CAREER PATH AND GARY ANDERSON.>>Kalani: I WAS A GA HERE. AND GARY ANDERSON AT SOUTHERN UTAH. AND I COACHED THE TIGHT ENDS AND THE O LINE AFTER THAT. WHEN GARY WENT TO UTAH AS A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, HE AND KYLE WHITTINGHAM HIRED ME TO COACH THE LINEBACKERS, AND WHEN GARY LEFT UTAH STATE TO BE THE HEAD COACH, I TOOK OVER AS HEAD COORDINATOR. SO WE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER. AND I MENTIONED A LOT OF MENTORS THAT I HAVE HAD AS COACHING, WHITTINGHAM AND ANDERSON, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY GOOD AT FOOTBALL COACHING AND JUST GOOD MEN. I LIKE OUR FRIENDSHIP. AND WE’RE FRIENDS RIGHT NOW, AND WE PLAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT AND WE’LL BE FRIENDS AFTER THE GAME. HE WANTS TO WIN, BUT I WANT TO WIN MORE THAN HE DOES, SO WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Greg: HOW MUCH DOES IT MEAN WHEN YOU SHOW UP AND YOU WATCH THEIR STUFF?>>Kalani: I JUST KNOW THAT HE’LL HAVE THE GUYS READY. YOU CAN’T BANK ON LAST WEEK’S PERFORMANCE. HE’LL HAVE THOSE GUYS READY TO PLAY, AND HE HAS A TOUGH GROUP OF GUYS IN LOGAN AND THEIR COACHES. THEY WILL HAVE THOSE GUYS READY TO PLAY, AND I HAVE SAID IT BEFORE, WE’RE GOING TO GET THEIR BEST SHOT, AND WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY GET OURS. THAT’S WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON WITH THIS BYE WEEK AND THE WEEK’S PRACTICE. AND I FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT. Anchor: YOU PLAYED OFFENSE AT BYU, AND YOU COACHED SOME OFFENSE TOO.>>Kalani: YEAH, I’VE COACHED EVERY POSITION IN FOOTBALL ACCEPT FOR THE QUARTERBACK POSITION. Greg: THAT A DREAM OF YOURS?>>Kalani: NOT REALLY, I THINK THAT A LOT OF THINGS I LEARNED FROM DEFENSE IS FROM KYLE AND GARY, BUT IT GIVES ME A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE, HAVING THE OFFENSIVE BACKGROUND. AND PLAYING IN THE SYSTEM THAT KIND OF PRODUCED THE OFFICE THAT WE HAD HERE AT BYU BEFORE LAVELLE WAS THE HEAD COACH, AND THAT GIVES ME AN INTERESTING PERSPECTIVE ON HOW TO DEFEND THE TEAMS. WITH MIKE SANFORD JR. RUNNING THE OFFENSE NOW, THERE ARE A LOT OF AIR RAID CONCEPTS THAT I RECOGNIZE IN THE GAME. SO WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, WE’LL SEE IF WE CAN PLAY GO FAST. AND WE HAVE BEEN PRACTICING AND SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT. BUT FOR US, WE HAVE TO DISRUPT AND BE AGGRESSIVE AND WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Greg: LOOKING FORWARD TO A COOL NIGHT IN LOGAN ON SATURDAY. BEFORE THE BREAK, WE WANT YOU TO ENJOY A BUFFET AT THE RESIDENCE IN MARRIOTT IN PROVO, MONDAYS AT 1:00 EASTERN AND 10:00 PACIFIC, THE COORDINATOR’S CORNER. ED LAMB. AFTER THE BREAK, FROM LIBERIA TO PROVO. COACH SITAKE, BYU FOOTBALL WITH KALANI SITAKE. Greg: FRIDAY NIGHT, IT’S YOUR FIRST TIME OPPORTUNITY TO SEE MARK COATES’ BASKETBALL SQUAD AS THE COUGARS TAKE ON UT TYLER. CAN YOU HEAR IT ON THE NOT BYU COUGARS APP ON FRIDAY AT 9:00 EASTERN, 6:00 PACIFIC. WELCOME BACK TO BYU FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY. FROM CORNER TO SAFETY WHERE YOU PLAYED BEFORE GOING OUTSIDE OF THE CORNER.? AND THE VERSATILITY MAKES HIM INDISPENSABLE. BUT IT’S NOT THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES HIS VALUABLE. HERE, IN THIS EDITION OF DEEP BLUE.>>MAY NAME IS DION, AND I WAS BORN IN LIBERIA.>>HE IS COMING OUT WITH THINGS THAT ARE HARDER FOR HIM, LIKE SCHOOL AND LEARNING AND HE’S A KID WHO IS REALLY THE EPITOME OF PUTTING YOUR HEAD DOWN AND WORKING HARD AT SOMETHING.>>THAT’S THE CORNERBACK, WHO IS IN THERE AS RUNNING BACK GETTING THE TOUCHDOWN.>>I SAW MY MOM FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND SHE PICKED ME UP AT THE AIRPORT. AND WE WERE AMAZED.>>THE MINUTE I SAW THEM GET OFF THE PLANE, AND I SAW DIE ON, AND HE MELTED MY HEART.>>HE WAS JUST QUIET. AND HE DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING.>>MY SISTER, WE’RE LIKE WHAT THE HECK IS THIS? SEEING THE CARS, AND WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING O AND IT WAS A CULTURE SHOCK. THE ENVIRONMENT. AND I WAS SWITCHING THE LIGHT SWITCH OFF AND ON. AND SEEING THE TABLE AND FOOD. AND WE HAD TO LEARN ENGLISH, AND MY DAD CAME BACK TO UTAH.>>I THINK IF YOU DO COME HERE, YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD. AND YOU HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL AND DO EVERYTHING THAT YOU K.>>INTERCEPTED! IT’S OVER! THE COUGARS PICK IT OFF. AND IN OVERTIME THEY WON IT!>> EVERY GAME, I REMEMBER. I SAY REMEMBER WHERE YOU CAME FROM, AND WHEN WHAT I TOLD YOU. WHEN YOU PLAY THE GAME, YOU PLAY WITH ALL YOUR HEART, THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE THERE FOR, AND THAT’S WHAT YOU ALWAYS DO. PLAY WITH ALL YOUR HEART.>>THE COUGARS GO. TO THE END ZONE. TOUCHDOWN!>>FROM HIS STORY TO HIS TEAMMATES AND HIS PLAYERS, IT’S REALLY A STORY OF TRIUMPH OVER DIFFICULTIES AND DETERMINATION, AND HE HAS BEEN FUN TO BE AROUND BECAUSE THE ODDS WERE REALLY AGAINST HIM AS FAR AS COMING TO A TOUGH ACADEMIC SCHOOL.>>HE’S THE KIND OF GUY, WHEN YOU GIVE HIM A CHALLENGE, HE’LL OVERCOME ANYTHING. I THINK NOW IS A GOOD CHALLENGE, AND BASICALLY TOLD HIM, HEY, A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T THINK THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT HERE BECAUSE SCHOOL IS SO HARD. AND THAT’S THE LAST THING WE WORRIED ABOUT WITH HIS ACADEMICS.>>WITH THE WEIGHT ROOM, AND RUNNING SPRINTS, WHATEVER IT MAY BE. THE GUY WHO CAME IN, THE UNDERDOG AS FAR AS THE ACADEMICS GO.>>HE HAS DONE A GOOD JOB AS FAR AS THE THINGS, NOT AS A CRUTCH, BUT JUST SOMETHING THAT HAS HELPED HIM GET THROUGH HIS EDUCATION.>>DION HAS AN INCREDIBLE CONTACT WITH THE GAME OF FOOTBALL. AND MORE THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER I’VE COACHED, HE HAS A SMILE.>>I REALLY LIKE TO HIT. ON THE COMPETITIVE TEAM, I HAD TO DECIDE WHICH ONE, AND FOOTBALL IS REALLY SOMETHING, YOU CAN HIT OTHER PEOPLE. AND IT’S LEGAL? I GOT TO PURSUE THIS THING CALLED FOOTBALL. EVERYTHING AS A LITTLE KID, FOOTBALL, YOU’RE REWARDED OBVIOUSLY FOR HITTING KIDS, AND I LIKE THIS.>>A LOT OF GUYS WILL MUSTER THE COURAGE NECESSARY TO MAKE THE PLAY IN THE MOMENT. AND A LOT OF GUYS ENJOYING THE AGGRESSOR WHEN THE ANGLE IS CORRECT TO MAKE CONTACT. AND DION LIKES ALL CONTACT. HE’S ONE OF THE BEST DBs THERE IS.>>BEING MARRIED TO MY WIFE, ADDISON, IT’S ONE OF THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS, SHE CHANGED MY LIFE FOR SURE. HERE, I WAS FOCUSED BUT NOT ALL THE WAY THERE FOCUSED IN SCHOOL OR FOOTBALL, REALLY. AND BEING MARRIED TO HER IN THE LAST YEAR, SHE WANTS KEPT ME IN A STRAIGHT LINE, AND HAVE ME ORGANIZED AND TAKE CARE OF MY HOMEWORK BEFORE I THINK ABOUT VIDEO GAMES OR STUFF LIKE THAT. SHE’S ALWAYS THERE TO LOVE ME AND TAKE CARE OF ME AND SHE DESERVES THE WORLD. IT’S A HIGHLIGHT IN MY LIFE. AND SHE HAS THE ENERGY TO MOTIVE ME AND DO BETTER IN MY LIFE.>>I REMEMBER TELLING HIM ONCE THAT DOORS WOULD OPEN AND THINGS WOULD HAPPEN AND HE WOULD BE AMAZED WITH HIS FAMILY. AND THE PEOPLE BACK HOME AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS, IF HE CONTINUED TO DO WHAT HE NEEDED TO DO, AND BE STRONG IN IT. REMEMBER YOUR HERITAGE, AND REMEMBER THOSE THAT FOUGHT FOR YOU TO BE HERE WHERE YOU ARE. YOU WALK ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS.>>SO BE PROUD OF WHERE YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER COMING FROM, YOU SHOULD HAVE PRIDE FOR WHAT HE IS. HE WILL ALWAYS BE AND BECOME SOMEBODY BETTER IN THE FUTURE. Greg: KALANI, WHAT A GREAT STORY.>>Kalani: THOSE ARE HARD TO FOLLOW UP WITH. WHEN YOU SEE DION AND THE THINGS THAT HE HAS DONE.? AND HE MAKES SO MANY PLAYS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD. BUT THE IMPACT THAT HE HAS ON OUR TEAM, THE COACHES THAT HE’S ABLE TO WORK WITH OUR TEAM AND OUR PLAYERS AND COACHES, HE’S A GOOD EXAMPLE OF HAVING FUN, EVEN IN THE TOUGH TIMES, YOU KNOW? BUT HE’S ABLE TO SHARE HIS STORY WITH THE PLAYERS, AND THAT GUY LOVING ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, EVEN IN THE COLD WEATHER AND WANT ELEMENTS, AND HE’S A SENIOR NOW, AND I’M JUST REALLY HAPPY FOR HIM. HE’S GOING TO DO SO MANY GREAT THINGS IN LIFE, AND BEYOND THIS AND BEYOND FOOTBALL. BUT HE’LL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FOOTBALL FOR A LONG TIME. Greg: WE’LL MISS HIM A LOT. HE’S ONE OF THE MOST DEFENSIVE PLAYERS, AND HE LOVES SPECIAL TEAMS AS WELL.>>Kalani: AND THE LONGEVITY, IT’S HARD BECAUSE HE’S ALWAYS PLAYING KICKOFF AND PUNT. AND HE WON’T COME OFF THE FIELD. AND HE GOES TO A SCOUT TEAM AND DOES STUFF JUST TO GIVE OUR TEAM A LOOK, AND SO HE JUST LOVING ON THE FIELD. SUCH A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS TO WATCH. AND HE’S NOT REALLY GOT TO SAY MUCH TO PEOPLE. BUT THEY FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE, AND THEY SEE HOW HAPPY HE IS, AND THE GUY POWERS FLU ADVERSITY LIKE ITS NOTHING. WHATEVER CHALLENGE WE DEAL WITH, HE JUST KILLS IT, AND WHETHER IT’S ACADEMICS, AND GETTING A DEGREE FROM BYU, WHATEVER IT COULD BE, WE GIVE HIM A CHALLENGE, AND WE ASKED HIM TO BE MORE OUTSPOKEN WITH THE YOUNG GUYS, AND THAT’S WHY THE CORNERS ARE STARTING TO STEP UP, BECAUSE OF THE MENTORING HE’S GIVING THEM AND THE TIME HE SPENDS WITH THEM. THERE’S SO MUCH MORE THAN PEOPLE CAN SEE, AND HE’S GOING TO BE REALLY MISSED BUT WE HAVE MORE TIME WITH HIM. AND WE’LL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. Greg: YOU SAID THAT HE CAN PLAY FOOTBALL AT THE NEXT LEVEL. AND YOU HEAR ABOUT HIM.>>Kalani: I DO, AND THE SCOUTS NOTICE THAT HE’S ALWAYS ON THE FIELD. AND HE HAS BEEN MAKING SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYS SINCE I’VE BEEN SEEING HIM IN FOOTBALL. SO HE HAS A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO A TO DO THAT. SO THAT GUY WILL FIND A WAY TO GET IT DONE, AND THAT’S THE WAY HE IS. Greg: Q-AND-A TIME ON THE SITAKE SHOW, AND WE HAVE THE LIVE AUDIENCE AND THE QUESTIONS READY TO ROLL. MIKE, YOU’RE ON WITH THE COACH.>>ALL RIGHT, COACH, WE HAVE HALLOWEEN COMING UP THIS WEEK, AND MY QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE SCARIEST MEMORY OR EXPERIENCE THAT YOU’VE HAD AS A PLAYER, AND THEN AS A COACH.>>Kalani: THE SCARIEST? YOU MEAN NOT REALLY HALLOWEEN?>>NOT REALLY.>>Kalani: I WAS GOING TO SAY HAUNTED HOUSES, THAT SOMEBODY WOULD PAY MONEY TO GO IN THERE AND GET SCARED. IF YOU NEED TO BE SCARED, I’LL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND FIND WAYS TO SCARE YOU. BUT I THINK THE SCARIEST MOMENT IS ALWAYS INJURIES, IT’S THE HARDEST PART OF THIS GAME. KNOWING THAT GUYS GET HURT. AND IT’S ALWAYS TOUGH TO SEE ALL OF THE YOUNG MEN, THE HARD WORK THEY PUT IN, AND FOR THEM TO BE LAYING ON THE GROUND, IT’S HARD AS A COACH AND AS A PLAYER. Greg: DEVIN CROSBY ON TWITTER SENT IN A COMMENT ABOUT THE ALTERNATE BLUE HELMET LOOK FROM DAYS GONE BY. HAVE YOU NOTICED ALL OF THE DIFFERENT HELMETS THAT BYU HAS HAD IN THE PAST? WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM BYU OCCASIONALLY?>>Kalani: I DON’T KNOW. Greg: DO YOU CARE WHAT THE GUYS WEAR?>>Kalani: NOT REALLY, WHATEVER. IF IT HAS A Y ON IT, I’M GOOD WITH IT. BUT I THINK WE KIND OF LOOKED INTO THE SOME OF THE VINTAGE LOOKS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND I TRUST THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT. THEY DO A GREAT JOB AT THAT, AND TOM FIGURES THINGS OUT TO GET SOME OF THE OLD LOOKS BACK? Greg: FEWER CRAZY LOOKS THAN MOST. IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF SCHOOLS HAVE MULTIPLE DIFFERENT LOOKS.>>Kalani: I THINK THE ROYAL BLUE IS SEW NICE, WHY WOULD YOU GO AWAY FROM IT? Greg: YOU WEAR THE ROYAL HAT PRETTY MUCH.>>Kalani: IT’S TO COVER UP MY RECEDING HAIRLINE. THAT’S THE NUMBER-ONE THING. Greg: I GUESS THAT’S ME TOO. THE LOCAL CROWD, ON HALLOWEEN, THIS THURSDAY NIGHT, FROM 5:00 TO 7:00 MOUNTAIN TIME, FAMILIES ARE GOING TO JOIN IN THE TRUNKER TREAT HERE AT BYU FOOTBALL IN&THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. YOU’RE BOUND TO SEE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BYU FOOTBALL PLAYERS, PLAYERS LIKE AUSTIN LEE, YES, ALONG WITH HIS FAMILY. THEY DEBUTED THEIR ALADDIN OUTFITS ON INSTAGRAM. SO A STRONG HALLOWEEN GAME, THAT’S EVERY YEAR, THEY LOOK FORWARD TO WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO TO DO.?>>Kalani: HE JUST WANTED TO TAKE HIS SHIRT OFF AND SHOW OFF. HE’S A GREAT LOOKING GENIE. Greg: AND ALADDIN, GENIE OR SMURF. SO A REMINDER NOW, JOIN US ON SATURDAY FOR THE PLAYER OF THE WEEK, McKENNA MILLER AND THE 11th RANKED BYU VOLLEYBALL TEAM.>>>COMING UP NEXT, CHECK WITH THE STUDIO. FRED WARNER WITH THE UNDEFEATED ‘9erS, AND KYLE VAN NOY, WITH THE UNDEFEATED PATRIOTS.>>>THE PLAYER TONIGHT WHO HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE, AND TRUE AND HIS TEAMMATES HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT HIM.>>I CAN NEVER BEAT THAT DUDE IN ANYTHING. EVERYTHING HE DOES, HE’S GOOD AT.>>HE’S LIKE A FATHER FIGURE FOR A LOT OF GUYS ON THE TEAM. AND I LOOK UP TO HIM A LOT. HE’S THERE FOR YOU, AND HE’S GOING TO BE THE GUY THAT KEEPS YOU IN LINE, AND WHEN IF YOU GET DOWN, HE PULLS YOU UP.>>HE’S ONE OF THOSE GUYS THAT LEADS BY EXAMPLE. AND BRINGS SOMETHING SPECIAL TO OUR FOOTBALL TEAM.>>FREAK, FREAK ATHLETE, THAT GUY CAN DO ANYTHING YOU ASK HIM TO DO.>>ONE OF THE THINGS TO ME, IT JUST SHOWS HOW GOOD OF AN ATHLETE HE IS. HE CAN STICK THROUGH ANYTHING, AND CUT THROUGH INJURIES AND STUFF, AND HE ALWAYS COMES BACK.>>AS A FORMER TIGHT END, HE CAN DO IT ALL. BLOCKS, CATCHES PASSES AND RUN ROUTES.>>FUTURE TIGER WOODS. ON THE COURSE TOGETHER. Greg: PLEASE WELCOME INTO STUDIO>> –HT END — [ APPLAUSE ] GOOD TO HAVE YOU HERE.>>GOOD TO BE HERE. THANKS FOR HAVING ME. Greg: SO THE BOISE STATE GAME WAS ALREADY PHEN DAYS AGO, AND YOU MOVED ON CLEARLY. BUT WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THAT NIGHT? WHAT LED UP TO IT AND HOW DID YOU PERFORM AS A TEAM?>>JUST TO SEE HOW WE COULD DO AS A TEAM, WE CAME TOGETHER IN PRACTICE, AND WE HAD A REALLY GOOD WEEK OF PRACTICE, AND IT WAS EXCITING ALL OVER THE PLACE, THE OFFENSIVE SIDE AND THE DEFENSIVE SIDE AS WELL SO FOR ME, IT WAS SPECIAL BECAUSE WE GOT TO SEE HOW GOOD THE TEAM CAN BE, AND IT WASN’T THE BEST GAME, BUT WE SHOWED KIND OF WHO WE ARE.>>YOU SHOWED AT THE END OF THE GAME HOW EXCITED AND INVESTED KALANI CAN BE ON THE SIDELINE, AND WHAT DOES HE BRING TO THE TEAM BY BEING THAT WAY?>>IT’S COOL AND I’VE HAD A LOT OF COACHES, AND PERSONALLY, I THINK IT’S AWESOME WHEN YOU SEE YOUR COACH WITH THAT MUCH LOVE FOR THE GAME AND FOR US AS WELL. AND TO BE EXCITE FORWARD THE THINGS THAT WE DO, AND IT MAKES YOU WANT TO PLAY THAT MUCH MORE AND MAKES YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GAME. I LOVE IT. AND I LOVE TO SEE HIM JUMPING AROUND AND HE TURNS THE CLOCK BACK 20 YEARS. Greg: NOW, ON THE VIDEO MAN TAJH THAT WE HAVE OF THE TEAMMATES, BUT KALANI, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ADD ABOUT THIS GUY HERE?>>Kalani: HE’S A BIG PART OF OUR TEAM AND OUR CULTURE AND HE HAS BEEN HERE FOR A WHILE, AND I THINK THAT HE MAKES TONS OF PLAYS, AND YOU SEE HIM WITH HIS ATHLETICISM. AND HE HAS HIS INJURIES AND THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT HE ALWAYS COMES BACK. HE MADE THIS AMAZING CATCH, AND NOT A LOT OF GUYS CAN GO FROM BEING A RECEIVER TO MOVING TO PLAY TIGHT END, AND HE’S ONE OF OUR BEST BLOCKERS ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AS WELL. THE THINGS THAT HE DOES WITH THIS TEAM, IT’S AMAZING, AND THE MENTORING THAT HE DOES, INDIVIDUAL MENTORING AND PUTTING GUYS UNDER HIS ARM AND TAKING CARE OF THEM. BRACKEN WAS TALKING ABOUT WHAT HE WAS TO HIM.? AND WANTS THINGS THAT HE DOES, HE’S A SOFT-SPOKEN GUY AND HUMBLE. BUT TO HAVE GUYS LIKE HIM AND DION, THEY’RE THINGS THAT I WATCH AS A COACH. AND JUST THANKFUL THAT I GET TO BE HIS COACH AND BE AROUND HIM.>>MORONI, WHEN YOU FIRST GOT HERE, YOU WERE A WIDE RECEIVER, RIGHT? HOW DID THAT POSITION GO FOR YOU? DID YOU THINK THAT YOU COULD BE A WHITEOUT AT BYU?>>I DID, AND INITIALLY COACH REYNOLDS, HE WAS RECRUITING ME, AND HE SAID ONE DAY YOU’RE GOING TO BE A TIGHT END. I WAS 185. AND FRESHMAN, CAME IN 185, AND SO I THOUGHT NO WAY. BUT 65 POUNDS LATER, I’M ALMOST 250 RIGHT NOW, THAT WAS A BIG CHANGE PHYSICALLY. BUT MENTALLY TOO, BECAUSE I HAD THE MINDSET, JUST BEING WIDE RECEIVER AND BLOCKING AND EVERYTHING THAT CAME WITH THAT. AND JUST DOING WHAT I NEED TO FOR THE TEAM. Greg: ARE YOU FULLY A TIGHT END EVERYWHERE NOW?>>I’M FULLY A TIGHT END NOW. NUMBER TWO, I WAS 117, AND I KNEW I JUST WANTED A FRESH START. AND KIND OF JUST WENT ALONG WITH MY WHOLE MINDSET. Greg: UTAH STATE, FLASHING FORWARD SATURDAY NIGHT, YOU WENT TO MOUNTAIN CREST HIGH SCHOOL? THAT’S NOT TOO FAR FROM LOGAN, RIGHT? SO BRING US BACK INTO YOUR GROWING UP A LITTLE BIT IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN YOU WERE GOING TO SCHOOL. UTAH STATE, YOU HAD THE EMPHASIS THERE, AND HOW DID THIS ALL TURN OUT?>>I REALLY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT SCHOLARSHIP WAS A THING UNTIL MY SOPHOMORE YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. MY MOM JUST KNEW THAT I WANTED TO PLAY FOOTBALL BECAUSE I LOVE TODAY. SHE DIDN’T GO TO COLLEGE, AND NO ONE IN MY FAMILY WENT TO COLLEGE, SO FOR ME, PAST HIGH SCHOOL, THE FIRST TIME I THOUGHT OF IT, ALEX KRESS A. I DON’T KNOW IF THANK YOU KNEW HIM. BUT I THOUGHT I COULD GO TO BYU, AND I LOOKED INTO IT, AND THOUGHT, YOU GET PAID TO GO TO SCHOOL? AND MY MOM SAID I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU THAT. AND FIGURING THAT OUT, SI CAME FROM A SMALL TOWN, 2200 PEOPLE. JUST 10 MINUTES SOUTH.>>DOES THE BYU-UTAH STATE GAME MEAN ANYMORE TO YOU NOW?>>I WANT TO WIN EVERY GAME, BUT IT’S NICE TO LOOK AT MY FRIENDS AND IN THE FACE AND SAY SORRY. BECAUSE ALL OF MY GOOD BUDDIES I GREW UP WITH ARE OUT THERE. Greg: WE SAW IN THE VIDEO MONTAGE WITH SOME OF YOUR TEAMMATES DESCRIBING THE INJURIES THAT YOU’VE GONE THROUGH, AND DESCRIBE SOME OF THOSE.>>THE INJURIES, SURGERY, IN 2017, AND THEN CAME BACK LAST YEAR, AND I PLAYED THE TWAIN SEASON, AND THEN IN THE FIFTH GAME LAST YEAR AGAINST WASHINGTON, AND SO THERE WAS NO QUESTION ABOUT GETTING THAT. AND I KNEW THIS WOULD BE MY LAST YEAR, SO THOSE ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ONES IN SHORT.>>YOU WATCH THEM BATTLE BACK TO GET READY FOR THIS YEAR, AND TOUGH GUY.>>REALLY TOUGH GUY, AND JUST THE MENTAL ASPECT OF IT. JUST STAYING POSITIVE AND WORKING THROUGH AWFUL T. AND THEN ALSO CARRYING FOR HIS TEAMMATES LIKE HE DID. IT’S GREAT TO HAVE A GUY THAT’S WILLING TO LEAD, BUT ALSO A GUY WILLING TO LEAD WHEN HE’S HURT, AND NOT ON THE FIELD. AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT WE BENEFIT FROM HAVING HIS PRESENCE IN OUR PROGRAM. SO ON AND OFF THE FIELD, HE HAS BEEN HUGE FOR OUR NAME.>>WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR LAST NAME?>>SO MORONI LAULU-PUTUTAU, MY MOM’S MAIDEN NAME, AND MY STEP-DAD. SO MY NAME USED TO BE MORONI STEVEN LEE, WITH A BIOLOGICAL FATHER.>>WHO IS STEVEN?>>MY MOM, THOSE ARE ALL JUST MY SIBLINGS, THE CURLY HAIRED TO THE RIGHT. AND MY WIFE.>>THE FAR RIGHT IS KEIRA, YOUR WIFE. AND SHE KNOWS HER WAY AROUND THE FIELD. AND EXPLAIN WHY.>>SHE DOES, SHE HAS BEEN THERE FOR A WHILE AND LOVES T. AND LOVING KIND OF BEHIND THE SCENES, AND WATCHING ALL OF THE SHOWS AND THIS SHOW.>>AND SHE FEELS AT HOME. AND YOU GUYS RECENTLY SHARED BIG NEWS.>>WE DID. WE FOUND OUT LAST WEEK, WE’RE HAVING A BABY BOY. SHE’S PREGNANT AND DUE IN APRIL. [ APPLAUSE ] Greg: ALL RIGHT, AND WHAT’S THE LAST THING? WHAT ARE YOU MAJORING IN? ARE YOU CLOSE TO WRAPPING UP?>>YES, CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT IS MY MAJOR. I DID A LONG MAJOR.>>YOU’VE BEEN HERE WHILE.>>THAT WAS A LONG MAJOR. I COULD BE A CHEMICAL ENGINEER, LIKE TEN MORE. BUT ANYWAYS, I LOVE IT. IT’S AWESOME AND IT WAS MEANT TO BE, AND I HAVE ONE MORE SEMESTER AFTER THIS. SO KIND OF UP IN THE AIR. I DON’T KNOW WHAT MY SENIOR YEAR HOLDS ACTUALLY. Greg: WE’RE NOT QUITE AT THE END FOR YOU, BUT HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FOOTBALL CAREER AT THIS POINT.>>IT’S A WHOLE OTHER LIFETIME, AND THE AMOUNT OF UPS AND DOWNS I’VE GONE THROUGH HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER. AND COACH, HE KNOWS VERY WELL I’VE NOT ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS, AND I WOULD SAY MORE TOWARDS THE END, IT WAS NOT ABOUT ME, AND THE FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS, IT WAS JUST FOOTBALL, AND THAT’S IT. AND IT TOOK ME A COUPLE OF SEASONS, AND THE INJURIES TO MARRY MY WIFE, AND GET INTO BYU. BYU BYU FOOTBALL IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A GAME, AND IT’S TRUE. YOU GET TO BE WITH SOME OF THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD AND BE PART OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES, AND THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. IT TOOK ME WHILE, BUT I’M GLAD I D. Greg: THANKS FOR COMING IN, VERY MUCH. ALL RIGHT. [ APPLAUSE ] AHEAD, YOU HAVE YOUR GROCERIES PAID FOR AND DROPPED OFF AT YOUR FRONT DOOR. SMITHS FOOD AND DRUG.COM. WE GO TO BREAK AND THIS WEEK’S TRIVIA QUESTION, TRUE OR FALSE N. THE LAST 50 YEARS, BYU HAS NEVER LOST TO UTAH STATE IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. TRUE OR FALSE? WE’LL TELL YOU AFT Greg: ALL RIGHT, BEFORE THE BREAK, WE ASKED TRUE OR PASS? BYU HAS NEVER LOST TO UTAH STATE IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER? THE ANSWER, HAPPILY IS TRUE. YES, 7 AND 0 ALL TIME WHEN THEY KICKED OFF TO THE AGGIES IN NOVEMBER OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS OF FOOTBALL. [ APPLAUSE ] EVERY GAME HAS IT’S OWN PERSONALITY. AND YOU KNOW THAT, BUT DOES THE ROAD TO BOISE STATE SET UP THE BAR FOR YOU GUYS THE REST OF THE YEAR?>>Kalani: THEY HAVE THE URGENCY TO PLAY AT THAT LEVEL. AND IT’S MOTIVATING FOR OUR PLAYERS, BUT IT’S ALSO TO BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN T EVEN WITH THAT RESULT, WE KNOW WE CAN PLAY BETTER, AND THAT’S THE FOCUS ON AFTER THE WIN WAS TO TRY TO GET BETTER EVEN FOR THAT GAME AND WINNING IT. SO WE’RE NOT JUST RESTING WITH THE RESULT, BUT BEING OUR BEST AND HOPEFULLY IT SHOWS UP ON SATURDAY. Greg: FOR NEXT WEEK’S SHOW, GO AND MONDAY 8:00 EASTERN, 5:00 PACIFIC. FOR JAROM JORDAN
