Backhand Topspin Against Backspin | Table Tennis | PingSkills

Hi, I’m Alois Rosario from PingSkills. Today
we’re going to discuss the backhand topspin against backspin. So firstly it’s critical to set your feet
up in the right position. Make sure that your feet are nice and wide apart, in a good balanced
position, bend your knees so that you’re getting down nice and low. Then let’s think about
the direction that our feet are facing. Making sure that we face completely towards where
you want the ball to go. So if I want the ball to go there, that’s the way that my feet
are facing and my body is facing. If I want to play the ball down the line and
I need to turn myself more so that I’m facing down the line. The next thing we need to consider is the
start position of your bat. We need to start our bat nice and low at about knee high. Why
do we need to start it low? So that we can get under the contact point and lift up for
the contact. This start position is really crucial, make sure you’re getting it down
nice and low, at least as low as your knee level. The we need to consider the contact point.
So when we actually contact the bat on the ball it needs to be a brushing action. So
that brushing action is what’s going to give you the topspin and it’s going to help you
to lift that backspin up over the net. So really critical that the contact is a fine
brushing contact. If you contact the ball flat the backspin is going to drag the ball
straight down into the table. So we need to get that brushing contact to lift the ball
with topspin. The last thing we then need to consider is
our finish position. So after we’ve made the contact let your bat flow all the way through
and make sure it finishes nice and high, above head height. The other important thing is
to make sure that the bat is going past your elbow. So let the bat swing past your elbow.
Don’t stop it here because then you’re not getting the full motion of your forearm and
your wrist. So make sure that the finish position is all the way through with a nice extension,
nice and high, and past your elbow. The other important thing is to make sure
that there’s plenty of racket head speed when you make the contact and follow through. If
you bring your bat through really slowly you’re not going to have enough speed to lift that
backspin over the net. So we need a nice fluid, fast swing, and to do that your shoulder,
your elbow, and your wrist need to be nice and relaxed so that you can swing all the
way through. So let’s have a look at Jeff’s bat now. He’s
been doing the backhand topspin and you can see where the ball marks are on his racket.
So the ball marks are in this channel here. So not quite in the centre but more towards
the end of the racket because that is where the bat is moving faster when he’s doing the
backhand topspin swing so that is roughly where you want to be aiming to hit the ball
on your racket for the backhand topspin. If there’s only a little bit of backspin on
the ball your swing can start to be a little more horizontal so you can start to go more
from back to forward. Still starting below the contact point and finishing above the
contact point but it doesn’t need to be as vertical. So now if there’s heavy backspin
on the ball, that’s when you need to start lower and finish higher, so the stroke becomes
more vertical. So the heavier the backspin the more vertical your stroke can be to lift
the ball up over the net.

  1. Hi could you give me some advice. I am looking to buy some new rubbers but i am unsure on what to get. I have been using tenergy 05 and tenergy 05fx rubbers but now they are becoming dead i want to upgrade. I like to play an attacking game where i am fast and spinny. What would you reccomend me getting? Thanks for the help guys 🙂

  2. Excellent demo and thanks for sharing. but you'll agree that this is only good for long balls with back spin. It would be difficult to swing the bat from the low position for balls falling close to the net?

  3. Is this only vs backspin? Or can you perform the same stroke with less lifting of the ball? Such as the amount of low you need to go and also the end form? Is this the same with the Forehand vs backspin video?

  4. Sometimes my opponenet gives a deep push with good amount of backspin and when i try to hit the ball with my back hand loop some times i miss. Do we need to judge the ball first then adjust ourselves and then play th stroke??

  5. Hey huys love your tutorialss.. they make me better and better at my game but the problem is i use the ragza 7 and joola express 2 rubers but there almost dead what rubbers would you suggest …plz reply i want i pros suggestion

  6. The first piece of advice concerning body position, in order to direct the ball where you want it, assumes that the opponent is going to play their shot straight at you.
    Does it not?

  7. These videos are so good that in the rush to watch one after another I almost forgot to hit the like button. Thank you very much for your kind efforts.

  8. I'm French and I don't very handerstand when you speaked but I handerstand your demonstation. Thank you your vidéo was very good!!!

  9. coach i have a question how to check which side of the bat is backhand side and which side of the bat is forehand side

  10. Most of the times i hit the net but when i manage to pull this off it's 'deadly' for my opponent thanks PingSkills 🙂

  11. Hi there, Have you heard about NO BRAND 999 rubber? First of all Congrats for all your videos I have seen so far. All of them are REALLY GREAT. I play really close to the table, I am 6.3 tall and dont have a good drive (top spin), it is too difficult for me to bent and do the proper movement, I am a bit too slow too. therefore from what I have read TENERGY05 seems it would be good rubber for me, but before I spend a lot of money on it, I would like your guidance… Of course I know it depends on my skills and type of game…

My style of game is much more defensive and forcing the opponent to make errors, i love playing BACKSPIN and more BACKSPIN and counter attack on the opponents attack with my very hard and dry straight attack. 😀

I am not on the professional level, but play quite well, I am used play with old chinese hard and very tacky rubbers like Firenship… but now I want to change and try THE SPINNIEST RUBBER POSSIBLE… VERY VERY SPINNY rubbers, I am crazy reading all about….

there are sooooo many videos with comments, some seems to be very commercial to me trying to sell their brand, I trust much more on you guys from PING SKILLS. What are the rubbers you recommend me the most, not too fast but THE MOST SPIN. I have read a lot good about theses ones: Tenergy05… DHS Hurricane 3 NEO… Andro Power Grip.. Ahhh I play with only one side of the racket…. I don care about price, of course it if is more durable better… I have got a very good sidespin serve, but will follow your guidance to improve it. Thanks SOOO MUCH IN ADVANCE.

  12. Respected Coach, In most of the cases opponent try to keep back spin close to net (like it bounce twice on table), flick is not an easiest skill to learn in months time or so, I am preparing for an open tournament in oct16 and having intermediate play level with good back hand, instead of just pushing or returning with backspin can you please advise some other option to make this return difficult for opponent. Regards,Dinesh Awtaney India

  13. Ok, I have a question; I noticed that although the stroke works just fine i.e. the back hand topspin off backspin, the extension of the arm is (to my eye – and I'm no expert you would whoop me every time) is – well, huge, above head height. Now a simple block using the pace you generate would surely arrive back with you before you could recover your position? Any thoughts? Cheers.

  14. Werner Schlager has a really good backhand topspin against backspin. He is the only top player I have seen using his backhand against choppers.

  16. Hey coach , I have two donic bluefire rubbers but sometimes i feel as if I am generating all the spin which can be painful. Is this how they all are or am I doing something wrong please I need a response quick because I want to beat the best player in my country

  17. Sir,This topspin is not elegant like the pro players like Ma long and Fan Zhendong .They do a much more elegant and shorter which makes them more consistent. Can you publish a more elegant of the backhand topspin.
Hey!,Please do not take it as a criticism of Pingskills. It is simply awesome.I am just asking if there is a better way of executing the backhand topspin.

  18. First of all many many thanks to ping skills.i usually don't comment but I thought to give my sincere thanks to u guys..I have started playing like a pro..6 month back o was not able to hold the bat properly but now I can defeat everyone.once again kudos to u guys..😀

  19. Is this different from banana flcik (chiqita)?? Im pretty sure for banana flick u have to put more elbow in front… idk.

  20. I like the fluid motion of your back hands. It's not like some of the pros who seem to strong-arm the racquet and stop its momentum

  21. what if the ball is coming at a higher speed at your backhand with some backspin, especially when you don't get enough time to react and position yourself to brush the ball completely to get enough topspin?? i actually get late to play this shot most of the time and i know one way is to pivot and play forehand or push but push sometimes rises the ball high and also very slow for the opponent to attack and forehand is not consistent enough. Any solution??

  22. hi Alois, just subscribed your channel . Would request you to make a video on top spin generated by Indian tt player Sanil Shetty. He has an awesome forehand top spin which is flat fast and has considerable spin, players like Liam pitchford find it difficult to return .

  23. I'm having trouble setting the correct bat angle so most of my forehand drive ends in the net. Please help me out.

  24. My backhand topspin vs heavy backspin is good but when there is less or no backspin it's always going off the side… I did move more forwards though
