To the prep ranks now. The Big 9 conference is at it again this Minnesota high school softball season. Defending state champs Mankato West and Faribault Fair-bolt sit first and third in the latest Class 3A state rankings. And not to far behind in the conference standings is Winona. At 9-3, the Winhawks are only 3.5 games back of first place. Winona getting a chance to play at Winona State this afternoon against Park of Cottage Grove. What a day on the mound for Ashton Hoeppner hope-ner Puts up the K to end the top of the 3rd. Fourth inning…more of the same from the senior pitcher. Picks up Another strikeout. Few batters later, runner on second. Lauryn Hamernik will help out her pitcher. Guns down the runner trying to steal third. Winona leads 1-0. Jump to the seventh. Hoeppner trying to protect a two run lead. Goes with the spinner. Swinging strikeout. After two straight batters get on. Park with the winning run at the plate. Hard hit to center, but it’s caught for the final out. Winhawks win 2-0…move to 10-3 this season. Across the border…Holmen softball taking on Eau Claire Memorial. Bottom 5th…Holmen leads by a pair. Hilltoppers win 5-0. To the college ranks, postseason play continuing today. We start with the NSIC softball tournament. Winona State beat Bemidji State 3-0 to reach the conference title game. Warriors losing to Minnesota State-Mankato in the final..1-0. Winona State will find out Monday if they are part of the NCAA Division II softball tournament field. Day 2 of the WIAC softball championshps. UW-La Crosse losing to UW-Whitewater in game 1….4-2 In the consolation round, Eagles beat UW-Stout….9-2 Setting up a rematch with Whitewater tomorrow at 10am for the conference title. NSAA Tournament action. The Viterbo softball season coming to an end this afternoon. V-Hawks lose to Mayville State 10-0. Viterbo finishes the season with 22 wins, the most since 2007. On the men’s side, Viterbo baseball losing in the consolation round, 5-4, to Waldorf. V-Hawks finishes the 2017 campaign 12-36. High school track and field meet out at Cochrane Fountain City this morning. Boys discus Damian Boberg of Arcadia takes 1st 126.09 ft Neck and neck race in the girls 4 by 800 m relay Durand just legs out CFC with a time of .54 Augusta runs away with the boys 4 by 800 m relay time of Girls 100 m hurdles Jenna Booth of Eleva Strum takes 1st She ran it in s Girls-Baldwin Woodville: 149.50 Boys-Eleva Strum: 155 WIAC outdoor track and field championship in Platteville. In the women’s competition, UW-La Crosse takes the team title with 172.50 points. On the men’s side, the Eagles complete the conference team title sweep, finishing first with 214 points, more than 60 points ahead of second place.
