?Avoid These MENTAL Golf Swing Mistakes (FIX THIS!)

(golf club hits ball) – Well hello, Adam Bazalgette here, founder of Scratch Golf Academy. Avoid this goal swing
mistake is the subject of this video, show you how to fix it, I’ll show you particularly,
this is something just so common among people, many
people don’t even realize they’re doing it, and if you can solve it, it will really really
help you have more fun and make more progress in your golf. I’ll show you the damaging aspects of it and then at the end we’ll
show you some great exercises that can really help you overcome it. (dramatic synth music) Well if you’re new to the
channel, or if you’ve watched the videos before but haven’t subscribed I’d really appreciate it if you’d hit the red subscribe button there. Helps me build the
channel, helps us get you more free content, and of
course hit the little red bell, it’s not red, hit the
little bell there as well that’ll make sure you’re
notified every time a video comes out, so go ahead
and do that if you would. And then we’ll dive into this video topic, I think this is gonna be helpful to you. Okay to improve in anything,
especially in a motor skill you have to have feedback,
even if you’re getting directions on your phone,
not only do you need to know where you’re going but that phone needs to know where you are,
that feedback allows you to go somewhere. Now gold swing takes
approximately a second and a half, let me go ahead and hit one
here, this is an eight iron. (golf club hits ball) A reasonable shot there. What happens is you get
immediate feedback and stimulus on the shot was it solid
contact, did it go straight? I give golf lessons all
the time, that’s what I do for a living, you would be
amazed the reactions people have. I don’t mean after the shot, I
mean before its hit the apex. Oh that was a good one,
or don’t count that! Just strong reactions like that. And the problem is, it takes
away from what you should be focusing on, so what
we’re gonna talk about here a little bit in this video is two things, two reasons that’s so
damaging and at the end we’ll give you the fix and
some ideas as to how you can do it better than the crowd
which are mostly reacting to just the shot. (golf club hits ball) Reasonably good shot there,
maybe just a fraction heavy. Here’s the first real
problem with just being outcome oriented, a given
swing, a given golfer, hits all kinds of shots,
the swing doesn’t really change that much. People come in to me for
golf instruction all the time and sometimes they’ll say something like, look I’ve got these two
swings I’m working on, can you film one of each and
we’ll decided which is better. Invariably they look just
about exactly the same so, people don’t have enough feel
to tell where their swing is and again, that same swing can
produce a myriad of outcomes, consecutively if you like
so it’s unreliable feedback. Just because you hit
one solidly doesn’t mean you made a different or a good swing. Now there’s no question, if
someone has better patterns, better motions, simpler
more functional technique they will have better shot
patterns in the long run. That’s why you wanna put
your mind on your pattern or the thing you’re working on, not just on the outcome, it’s unreliable. Right another reason this is so damaging. It takes your conscious mind
about a second and a half, two seconds or something
to effectively download what just happens, you’ll do
a motor skill and it takes you just a moment to evaluate and
sort of, recreate the sense of you did and make some
sort of an evaluation on it. The problem is people’s
reaction as I said earlier is so strong to that immediate
shot, then they see it land they do what-not, by
the time they come back to what they should have
been on, that imprint, that sense of what you
did is long since gone. It does not last long, so
you’ve gotta be aware enough that sure you notice the
shot, the shot is the shot, but you can come right to
what you should be focusing on and paying attention to which is the thing that you’re working on. If you like this content
by the way I have a nice three part video series, free for you down in the description box,
solid strike formula, go ahead and pick that up. Now here’s the thing, couple
of things you need to know mentally as we get into this exercise: First off, your subconscious
mind in that one and half, two seconds it takes to hit the ball, does not benefit from you
stabbing it with reminders from your conscious mind,
you don’t wanna get to here and then say, don’t
forget to drive your legs or something like that,
that isn’t gonna help you. So you wanna calm conscious
mind, and let your subconscious do what you’ve asked it to
do, this assumes of course you have a clear priority
and you’ve rehearsed it a little bit so, here’s
the thing, as I say you don’t wanna think about what to do, you wanna be able to feel what happens, so you’ve gotta train yourself to do that. Now something you may feel
in your hands or club is it’s not abstract but it’s a
little bit harder to sense. So start by training
yourself with something that’s really obvious and real. Here’s a couple of suggestions. I can see when I look
down on the golf ball, the sparkle on top of the
ball, the way the dimples start to shade and move
around, the shadow for example. Those are real things that are down there. There’s a lot of choices,
I could feel for instance the warmth of the sun
on the side of my face or how my shirt collar feels
rubbing on me, etc. etc. Put your mind, practice, putting your mind on one of these things
and can you keep it there with a nice quiet mind throughout the act of hitting the ball. You will be surprised how
relatively elusive this is. I’m gonna try a shot and
my thought is gonna be those couple of dimples
that are partly shaded. Let me try a shot, see how we do. My only goal isn’t a great
hit, I’ll notice the hit but can I keep my mind
there and keep it quiet? (golf club hits ball) mmmm, pretty good right,
when I got to about here I could tell I began to think
about what I needed to do and was I in the right spot, a little bit, then I came back to the dimples there. Hang out with it, as I
say it could be anything. Sun on the face, the
better you get at that the more you can get to where
you can just stay with that and not jump to your swing,
or not jump to your conscious mind the better you’re getting. Once you’re good at it,
then pick out the thing you’re working on, again
there’s a lot of things you could be working
on, and see if you can be good at placing it there,
as I say you’ll notice contact but don’t let it bleach
out what you’re working on. You get good at this
and you train yourself and by the way, you’re gonna
have to keep coming back to it. I find myself getting antsy,
have to go back to this drill to quiet myself down, you
will have a lot more fun in your golf, you’ll really play the game and you’ll make a lot more progress. Well I hope that helps you avoid that costly golf swing mistake. Would really appreciate
it if you liked the video that you hit the thumbs
up or like button there. That helps me and helps build the channel so we can get you more free content. Thanks again for watching. Hope this helps you. (funky electronic music)
